...there is the question of why the KPRF, as the successor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the largest opposition party to United Russia, does not command all the votes of those who favor the old system. The stability of Putin's position is likely due to a number of factors, among them his personal popularity, his management of a controlled opposition as described in Chapter Four and a general perception that the KPRF lacks the full legitimacy and credibility of the old CPSU. The KPRF is also in more or less full agreement with Putin's foreign policy, which obviously eclipsed domestic issues in the public consciousness in 2014 and especially in 2022. Thus as of this writing there is little pressure for Russians otherwise change. to vote KPRF unless or until Russia enters a severe domestic crisis or conditions
