William Henry Seward (May 16, 1801 – October 10, 1872) was a Statesian politician who was Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869. In 1867, he bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. He tried to buy the Danish Virgin Islands and annex the Dominican Republic, but Congress rejected both proposals.[1]
