The Sultanate of Darfur was a state in what is now Sudan. It was founded by the Dadio Arab tribe that conquered the native population and fought against the pagan Tunjur Arab tribe in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Fur people emerged as the main nationality of Darfur and spoke a Sudanic language with major Arabic influence. The family structure of Darfur retained some elements of primitive communism and matriarchy despite the rule of a patriarchal sultan.[1]
