Celia Sánchez Manduley (May 9, 1920 – January 11, 1980) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Sánchez was born in 1920 in a rural bourgeois family. She worked in her father's medical practice after high school and never attended university.[1]
Cuban Revolution[edit | edit source]
Sánchez led the underground wing of the July 26 Movement and chose the landing site of the Granma in 1956. She created a farmers' militia who supplied guerrillas in the Sierra Maestra. Sánchez herself became the first woman to join the Cuban Revolution.[1]
Later life[edit | edit source]
After the revolution, Sánchez helped create the new Cuban government and oversaw literacy programs and the creation of wildlife reserves.[1]
