After Cabral's assassination, Aristides Pereira became Secretary General of the PAIGC and President of Cabe Verde while Luis Cabral governed Guinea-Bissau as Chairman of the State Council. The military overthrow of Luis Cabral by João Vieira subsequently resulted in a party split, in which Pereira and the Cabe Verde branch formed the [[African Party for the Independence of Cabe Verde]]. Since then the PAIGC has struggled to maintain political power in the country as a series of military regimes took power.
