Max Shachtman (September 10, 1904 – November 4, 1972) was a Statesian Trotskyist. Along with James Cannon, he was purged from the CPUSA in 1928. They tried to infiltrate the Socialist Party and founded the Socialist Workers Party in 1938. After the SWP split in 1940, he took a minority of members to found the Workers Party. Shachtman followed an extreme form of Trotskyism that described the Soviet bureaucracy as a new ruling class instead of a degenerated workers' state.[1]
