Moscow (Russian: Москва, tr. Moskva) is the capital and largest city of Russia. It was also the capital of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics until 1991. Moscow has been the capital of Russia for long stretches of Russia's history, although from 1712 to 1918 the capital was transferred to St. Petersburg during the time of the Russian Empire.
