The Nicaragua Canal is a proposed shipping route through Nicaragua which would serve as an alternative and a competitor to the US-controlled Panama Canal.

While the plan has been on-and-off for years, optimism for its completion can be attributed to the recent recognition of the People's Republic of China (rather than the Taiwan-based Republic of China government) thanks to the election of the socialist Sandinista government.[1][2]
