The '''People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola''' '''(MPLA)''', is an [[Republic of Angola|Angolan]] [[Left-wing politics|left-wing]], [[Democratic socialism|democratic socialist]] political party. The MPLA, founded by the likes of Amilcar Cabral, Agostinho Neto, and Viriato da Cruz, came to be the dominant political party in Angola since its victorious campaign against the Portugese during the Angolan War for Independence from 1961 to 1974. In the aftermath of the Angolan Civil War, the party then established itself as a [[Marxism–Leninism|Marxist–Leninist]] [[Vanguard party|vanguard]] of the [[People's Republic of Angola]] which lasted until 1992. In an effort to end the ongoing military conflict with the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the MPLA reformed the constitution and established a multi-party democracy and sidelined Marxism–Leninism in favor of democratic socialism.
