Chokwe Lumumba (August 2, 1947 – February 25, 2014) was a Statesian black nationalist and lawyer who served as mayor of Jackson, Mississippi from 2013 to 2014. He was a member of the Republic of New Afrika.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Lumumba studied at Western Michigan University and participated in the occupation of a building after Martin Luther King Jr. was assinated. He served as vice president of the RNA in the early 1970s before moving to Jackson, Mississippi.[1]
Political career[edit | edit source]
As a lawyer, Lumumba defended Black revolutionaries including Assata Shakur. He helped found the New Afrikan Peoples Organization and Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. He ran for city council in 2009 and died whiles serving as mayor.[1]
