Wagadu, also known as Ghana or the Ghana Empire, was an early state in Western Africa. The state formed around the year 300 when an alliance of Berber tribes abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and assimilated into the local agricultural population. In the 10th and 11th centuries, the ruling class converted to Islam and expanded its trade with Arabs, further developing the slave system out of clan society.[1]
