Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine Monet Lamarck (1 August 1744 – 18 December 1829) was a French biologist and early theorist of evolution. In opposition to creationism, he proposed that organisms acquire characteristics over time and pass on these changes to their descendants. For example, he believed that giraffes had long necks because they stretched their necks to reach the tops of trees. He did not know how these changes would be inherited.[1]
