Jeanine Áñez Chávez is a far-right Bolivian politician and coup leader. She took power in 2019 with the support of the military and declared herself "interim president of Bolivia," overthrowing democratic socialist president Evo Morales.
Presidency[edit | edit source]
In her first week in power, Áñez signed a decree giving impunity to the military. In November 2019, security forces killed over 20 peaceful protestors and injured hundreds. Her supporters burned the indigenous Wiphala flag and attacked indigenous people.[1]
Arrest and trial[edit | edit source]
In March 2021, Áñez was arrested after mass protests and the return of Movement to Socialism (MAS) to power. On 10 June 2022, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the coup.[1]
