Fravartiš (died 653 BCE), also known as Xšathrita, was the first king of independent Media. In 673 BCE, he began a rebellion against Assyria with support from the Scythians and Cimmerians. The next year, the Scythians withdrew their support when Aššuraḫaiddina married his daughter to the Scythian chieftain Prtatavah. Fravartiš established an independent Median state in the same year and began uniting the Median tribes. In 653 BCE, he attacked Assyria and was killed in battle. The Scythians conquered his kingdom and ruled it until 625 BCE.[1]
