The spelling of Kyiv was popularized by the 1995 protocol performed by Ukrainian nationalists after independence. - The spelling was Kiev during Soviet administration and a part of Stalin's anti-ukrainian-nationalism policies. The spelling of Kyiv was popularized by the 1995 protocol performed by Ukrainian nationalists after independence.
