History[edit | edit source]
France began colonizing Gabon in 1839 after tricking Antchoué Komé Rapontcombo into signing away his land. Gabon became independent in 1960 under neocolonial leader Leon Mba. Mba died in 1967 and was replaced by Omar Bongo, who ruled until 2009.[1]
Neocolonialism[edit | edit source]
France has 120 companies in Gabon and a military base of 450 soldiers. Almost 14,000 French citizens live in Gabon.[1]
