The French Republic, also known as Third Republic, was a French state established after the collapse of the Second Empire in 1870 as a result of the Franco-Prussian war, until its own collapse in 1940 due to Nazi occupation.
History[edit | edit source]
France declared war on Nazi Germany following its invasion of Poland but did not immediately begin fighting. Édouard Daladier's government banned the French Communist Party on 26 September 1939 and arrested thousands of its members.[1]
