The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, commonly known as Frontex, is the border police of the European Union. It was founded in Poland and now operates throughout the EU and in more than 20 non-EU countries.[1]
Growth[edit | edit source]
Frontex's budget has grown by more than 75 times since 2005 and has a budget of €5.6 billion between 2021 and 2027. By 2027, it plans to have 10,000 armed guards.[1]
Human rights abuses[edit | edit source]
Border guards have committed violence against migrants, especially during deportation flights. Frontex also trains the Libyan Coast Guard, which holds migrants in "concentration camp-like conditions."[1]
Roughly 1,100 people are imprisoned in a concentration camp on the Greek island of Chios.[2]
