The Mali Federation was a short-lived union in West Africa linking the former French colonies of Senegal and Sudan. Established on April 4, 1959, as a self-governing territory within the French Community prior to its independence from France in June 20, 1960. A tense stand off between Sudanese and Senegalese officials eventually culminated in the dissolution of the Mali Federation two months after its independence, resulting in the formation of the Republics of Senegal and Mali.
