Egon Rudi Ernst Krenz (born 19 March 1937) is a German politician and the last leader of the GDR, serving for less than two months in 1989. Previously, he was the head of security and leader of the Free German Youth.[1]

Political career

On 9 October 1989, Krenz tried to contact Erich Honecker to make sure the police were not violent against protestors. He was not able to reach him because Honecker was in meetings all day, but he did talk to Erich Mielke, the Stasi chief.[1]:143–4

Post-annexation

Krenz was imprisoned after the Western annexation of the GDR for deaths near the Anti-Fascist Protection Wall.[1]:152
