Nuclear testing[edit | edit source]
Between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands.[2] In 1952, a nuclear explosion vaporized the entire island of Eluglab. In 1954, a 15-megaton bomb detonated at Bikini atoll released a cloud of radioactive dust that poisoned the crew of a fishing boat 80 miles away. More than a third of the Marshall Islanders exposed to radiation contracted cancer. In 2014, the Marshall Islands tried to sue the United States for failing to follow the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.[1]
