Arrest

On 17 May 2023, police arrested and interrogated Klarenberg at Luton Airport after he arrived from Serbia, where he lives. They seized his electronic devices and band cards and took his DNA and fingerprints under "counter-terrorism legislation". He was denied the right to legal counsel and the right to remain silent and faced up to 51 weeks in prison or a £2,500 fine if he did not cooperate fully with the investigation. Upon his release, Klarenberg’s tablet and two SD cards were withheld for a week with another card remaining with the police on the grounds that it may be “relevant to criminal proceedings.”[1]

The Grayzone made public the details of the arrest on May 30. On June 2 the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), which Klarenberg is a member of, published a short article expressing "grave" concern over his arrest, however, less than 24 hours later the article was deleted withdrawing support in accordance with the NUJ's allegiance to imperialism.[2]
