Bornu, also known as the Bornu Empire, was a state centered around Lake Chad. It was led by the Magomi tribe, whose members were considered descendants of the Kanem sultans.[1]:50

History[edit | edit source]

The Kanem Empire conquered the territory of Bornu after adopting Islam in 1130. A part of the Kanembu population fled to Bornu in the 14th and 15th centuries when the Tubu conquered Kanem.[1]:50

Government[edit | edit source]

The sultan of the Kanuri ruled with the participation of a council but retained absolute power. The son of the sultan's older sister was the heir to the throne. Bornu had a large army that included an armored cavalry, and soldiers received land in exchange for military service.[1]:51
