Isaakiy Semyonovich Solzhenitsyn (11 June 1891 – 15 June 1918) was an officer of the Imperial Russian Army and veteran of the First World War. He was the son of Semyon Efimovich Solzhenitsyn, a shepherd, and Pelageya Pankratievna Solzhenitsyna. Solzhenitsyn volunteered in 1914 to fight the Germans, and was awarded the Cross of St. George for bravery. He married Taisiya Solzhenitsyna, née Shcherbak, in Belarus in 1917. In February 1918, shortly before the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, Solzhenitsyn was dismissed from the Army. Solzhenitsyn died in a hospital on 15 June 1918 following a hunting accident, six months before his son Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was born.[citation needed]
