In 1910, he was sent to Butyrki prison in Moscow after a shootout with police. He was released from prison after the February Revolution and left Ukraine during the German and Austrian invasions.[1]

Makhnovshchina

Makhno returned to Ukraine in late 1918 and began a campaign of killing landlords and army officers and confiscating their estates. In early 1919, he assisted the Red Army against the Ukrainian nationalists in Yekaterinoslav. He began a rebellion against the Red Army in May 1919 when the counterrevolutionary Anton Denikin invaded Ukraine. In October 1920, he formed another alliance with the Bolsheviks against Wrangel's White Army in Crimea.[1]
