Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya was a Soviet Red Army soldier.
Great Patriotic War[edit | edit source]
After Nazis killed her husband, Oktyabrskaya sold all her possessions and used the money to buy T-34 tank. After five months of training, she participated in an assault against the Nazis in October 1943, where she destroyed Nazi machine gun nests and artillery pieces. In 1944, an anti-tank shell hit her tank while she was repairing it, and the shrapnel hit her head and put her in a coma. She died two months later and was posthumously awarded Hero of the Soviet Union.[1]
