John Caldwell Calhoun (March 18, 1782 – March 31, 1850) was a Statesian politician who served as Vice President of the United States under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He opposed centralized governments and defended slavery,[1] accusing northern abolitionists of violating states' rights.[2]
