Child labour is the exploitation of children through wage labour.

History[edit | edit source]

Child labour fueled the Industrial Revolution and reduced wages for adult workers. During the years after the Civil War, children aged 10 or younger worked in industrial, retail, and agricultural fields.[1]

By country[edit | edit source]

United States[edit | edit source]

The number of minors working illegally in the USA has increased by 37% since 2022. 300,000 to 500,000 work in agriculture and make up 48% of workplace deaths for minors. Over 100 children aged 13 to 17 work in dangerous meatpacking facilities. They worked overnight cleaning saws and at least three were injured by chemical burns. Hyundai and Kia factories in Alabama employ children as young as 14. In January 2023, the Iowa legislature introduced a bill that expanded where 14 and 15-year olds could work and exempted capitalists from liability if they died or were injured at work.[1]
