Djibouti, officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country in East Africa ruled by neocolonial dictator Ismail Omar Guelleh.

History[edit | edit source]

Djibouti gained independence from France in 1977 under Hassan Gouled Adipton. It was a one-party state until 1992. He ruled until May 1999, when his nephew Ismail Omar Guelleh became president.[1]

Military bases[edit | edit source]

The United States established a military base in Djibouti in 2001. France, Italy, and Japan established military bases in 2002, 2011, and 2012 respectively. In 2017, the Chinese People's Liberation Army established a base in Djibouti.[1]

Living standards[edit | edit source]

More than 60% of Djiboutians aged 15–34 are unemployed, and poverty has increased from 41.1% in 1996 to 79.4% in 2012.[1]
