Kanem, also known as the Kanem Empire, was a medieval state located north of Lake Chad. It was established by Tebu tribes before being conquered by Arabs and converting to Islam. The conversion accelerated the breakdown of the clan system and strengthened the state and international trade. The modern Kanembu nation formed from the inhabitants of Kanem.[1]
