Michel Jean Barnier (born 9 January 1951) is a conservative French politician who served as Prime Minister of France from September to December 2024. He was appointed by Emmanuel Macron even though the progressive New Popular Front won the most recent elections. He bypassed parliament in order to defund public services, leading to a no confidence vote on 4 December.[1] The far-right National Rally supported the no-confidence vote even though Barnier tried to gain their support with anti-immigration concessions.[2]
