Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was the Queen of the United Kingdom and several of its former colonies from 1952 to 2022. After her death in 2022, her son Charles became the King of the United Kingdom but has no popular support.[1] Since 2012, popular support for the monarchy has decreased from 80% to 53%,[2] and only 33% of people aged 18–24 support the monarchy.[3]

Reign

Elizabeth was placed in line for the throne in 1936 after her Nazi-sympathizer uncle Edward abdicated. She became queen on 6 February 1952 and reigned for 70 years, longer than any other British monarch. Two days before she died, she appointed Conservative Liz Truss as Prime Minister of the UK.[1]

Criticism

Colonialism

Elizabeth and other members of British royalty benefitted from British colonialism and never acknowledged the atrocities that the British Empire committed. She ordered the suppression of an anti-colonial uprising in Yemen in 1963.[4]

Tax evasion

The Paradise Papers revealed that Elizabeth invested millions of pounds in a tax haven in the Cayman Islands.[5]
