James Abram Garfield (November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881) was the short-lived 20th President of the United States, serving from March to September of 1881. Charles Guiteau, who was descended from French Huguenots, assassinated him after Garfield refused to appoint him as the U.S. Ambassador to France.[1]
