Patrick "Paddy" Whalen was an Irish-Statesian communist and union organizer.[1]
Early life
Whalen was born in the Midwestern United States in 1884 and witnessed early workers' movements such as the Knights of Labor.[1]
Political career
In 1936, Whalen supported the International Longshoremen's Association's struggles for higher wages and against blacklisting. He organized a march on Washington, D.C. to make the NLRB rule in favor of the workers. He also stormed a bar that refused to serve Black workers and made it integrate.[1]
Military career
During the Second World War, Whalen joined the Merchant Marine to supply Allied territories under attack by the Nazis. He died when a U-boat sank his ship near Bermuda.[1]
