Rafael Cancel Miranda (July 18, 1930 – March 2, 2020) was a Puerto Rican freedom fighter who fought against U.S. colonialism.[1]

Political activism

Cancel joined the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party at age 15. In 1954, he and other three other Puerto Rican nationalists attacked the U.S. Capitol building in an attempt to liberate Puerto Rico from U.S. colonialism. He was immediately arrested and given a life sentence.[1]

Prison

While in prison, Cancel led prisoner strikes and formed alliances with prisoners of other nationalities, including Leonard Peltier and Herman Bell. He was freed in 1979 by U.S. President Jimmy Carter following a prisoner exchange with Cuba.[1]
