Ronald Reagan was a neoliberal U.S. politician and the President of the United States from 1981 to 1989.
Domestic policy
Reagan cut taxes for the rich and increased income inequality.[1] He blamed the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s on gay people instead of trying to eradicate the disease. His policies caused thousands of needless deaths.[2] In 1981, Reagan fired over 11,000 PATCO union air traffic controllers who were striking to demand fairer working conditions.[3] He also arrested the PATCO union leaders. To this day, union busting businesses draw inspiration from Reagan’s actions at the time.[3] In addition to union busting, Reagan cut subsidized housing by more than 80% and said that homeless people were homeless by choice.[4]
Foreign policy
Reagan funded death squads in El Salvador and Guatemala that committed genocide against indigenous peoples, as well as the far-right Contras in Nicaragua.[5]
