Hugo de Groot (10 April 1583 – 28 August 1645), also known as Hugo Grotius, was a liberal Dutch philosopher. He encouraged genocide against all non-Christians and used these beliefs to encourage the colonization of America. He also defended slavery as long as it was not against other Europeans.[1] Grotius compared slaves to perpetual wage workers, but Locke described slavery and wage labour as completely different systems.[2]
