The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as Hamas by its Arabic initials, is a Palestinian resistance movement that governs Gaza. It originally advocated for the complete destruction of Israel but now wants Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders.[1] The imperialist governments of Israel, Australia, the UK, USA, and EU have classified Hamas as a terrorist organization,[2] although it opposes al-Qaeda and jihadism.[1]

History

Hamas formed during the First Intifada in 1987. In 1992, Israel exiled hundreds of Hamas members. The United Nations Security Council condemned the expulsion, but Bill Clinton prevented them from returning.[1] Hamas won the 2006 elections to the Palestinian National Authority.[2]
