John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 7 May 1873) was a British philosopher and the founder of utilitarianism. He defended European colonialism and slavery in order to "civilize" the peoples of the Global South but believed slavery would eventually become unnecessary and therefore supported the Union in the Statesian Civil War.[1]
