John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 7 May 1873) was a British philosopher and the founder of utilitarianism. He defended European colonialism and slavery in order to "civilize" the peoples of the Global South[1] and believed that colonized peoples should not have democratic rights.[2] However, he believed slavery would eventually become unnecessary and therefore supported the Union in the Statesian Civil War[1] as well as John Brown.[2] He noted that workers with the most difficult jobs were actually paid the least.[3]
