Mark Joseph Carney (born 16 March 1965 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories) is a Canadian politician, economist, and bank manager currently serving as the 24th prime minister of Canada as well as the leader of the Liberal Party since March 2025. Carney has never held any elected public office and was instead a banker for most of his career, having previously served as the 8th governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, during the 2008 financial crisis, and the 120th governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, during Brexit and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the announcement in January 2025 that unpopular leader Justin Trudeau planned to resign (both as leader of the Liberal Party and as prime minister), Carney declared his intent to run in the ensuing March party election. Carney dishonestly sold himself as an outsider despite his close ties to the Liberal Party leadership. This perceived disconnect from Trudeau's leadership as well as the aggressive rhetoric of Statesian president Donald Trump allowed the banker to gain popularity, winning the election in a landslide. In actuality however, Carney's policies do not vary much from his predecessor, and Canada's support for neoliberalism, imperialism and Ukraine remains unchanged.[1]
