Muhammad Ali was a heavyweight boxing champion and anti-imperialist.[1]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Ali was born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942. He began boxing at age 12 and won a gold medal in 1960 at the Rome Olympics. He won the 1964 world boxing title after defeating Sonny Liston.[1]

Political activism[edit | edit source]

Clay joined the Nation of Islam in the 1960s and became part of the Black liberation movement. He became friends with Malcolm X and changed his name to Muhammad Ali after converting to Islam. The United States removed his championship title after he refused to fight for the USA in the Vietnam War. In 1990, he traveled to Iraq with the ANSWER Coalition.[1]
