| <nowiki>''</nowiki>However, in Somalia's last general election, held in March 1969, the government party was returned to power with sustainability increased support. Some sixty-two parties, mainly thingly disguised clan organizations, fielded over 1000 candidates for the 124 seats in the Assembly. This archaic situation, which indicated the continuing strength of parochial kinship loyalties, was followed by an increasingly despotic style of government and an alarming increase in nepotism and corruption. There was no longer any effective parliamentary opposition - except inside the government party. Matters were brought to a head by the assassination of the President of the Somali Republic on the 15, October 1969. The Prime Minister, who was out of the country at the time, returned precipitately to Somalia to secure the election of a new president who would reappoint him as Premier. When it became clear that this outcome was imminent, the Army, in the early hours of 21 October, just before the formal election of the new president, seized power in a smoothly executed and bloodless coup. Ministers and other leading figures (including the influential former police chief) were placed in detention or under house arrest, the Constitution was suspended, the Supreme Court abolished, the National Assembly closed, and political parties were banned. The country was henceforth to be ruled by a Supreme Revolutionary Council (SRC) composed of military and police officers and chaired. by the existing Army commander, General Siyad Barre.<nowiki>''</nowiki>

| The SRSP defined by the Statute of the SRSP, is the <nowiki>''</nowiki>vanguard of the Somali Working People.<nowiki>''</nowiki> It states that the most <nowiki>''</nowiki>active, progressive, and politically conscious members of the society who represent worker's, peasant farmers, progressive intellectuals, the armed forces and petty nationalist traders.<nowiki>''</nowiki> The party endlessly <nowiki>''</nowiki>relentlessly<nowiki>''</nowiki>, opposes imperialism, neo-colonialism (colonialism), racism, Zionism, and any and all forms of exploitation of man by man, and leads the Somali masses and struggles for the creation of a new society that is based on social justice and the establishment of the material base which states that it is an objective necessity for building socialism. The co-operation and friendly relationship of the Party with the revolutionary movements of the world and the socialist countries will play an important role in this direction. Scientific Socialism is what the SRSP's guiding philosophy was Scientific Socialism which enables and states that <nowiki>''</nowiki>us to understand the general laws for developing a socialist society and at the same time taking into account the specific historical experience of the Somali Democratic Republic. The statute then states that, <nowiki>''</nowiki>In view of this, it is highly essential for the Party to mobilize and educate the working masses with these principles in order to realize and fulfill the programme of the Party; it is also equally important to prepare ideologically as well as professionally the cadres of the Party and of the State; to provide the basic guidelines for the organization and the training programme that will effectively impart, to the Party members, the spirit of promoting their inter-relations which in turn, helps in strengthening the co-operation between the higher bodies and the local organizations of the Party. This policy can be enhanced if it strictly adhered to the idea of consultation and the unity of purpose in matters relating to policy and organization; the increase of the two-way flow of ideas and contacts between the masses and the Party in order to further their practical implementation.
