The Soviet of Nationalities[a] was the upper house of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. It represented the various nationalities and ethnic groups of the Soviet Union. According to the 1936 constitution, contained 25 deputies from each union republic, 11 from each ASSR, five from each autonomous oblast, and one from each autonomous okrug.[1] This was changed to 32 deputies from each union republic in 1977.[2] Laws in the Soviet Union had to be approved by a majority vote from the Soviet of Nationalities and the Soviet of the Union.
