Talal Abu Zarifa was a Palestinian Communist leader who was martyred in a Zionist assassination on May 12, 2024.

Talal Abu Zarifa was born in Abasan al-Kabira in Gaza. He recieved a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Algiers in 1983. Due to this specialty he worked as the director of the Land Reclamation Department at the Ministry of Agriculture in Khan Yunis.[1][2]
He was involved in politics from the age of 17, when he joined the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine in 1977. He also was involved with the General Union of Palestine Students Conference in 1979 and the General Conference of the General Union of Teachers in Algeria. He later was involved in the National Observer Council from 1986 to 1989. At the time of his murder he was a member of the Central Committee of the DFLP and the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front.[1][2]
During the Second Intifada he was targeted by the Zionist Entity, with his home being destroyed in 2003 and with him surviving several assassination attempts.[1][2]
He was martyred at dawn on Monday, May 13 or late evening Sunday, May 12, 2024 at the home of the Al-Hamami family in Al-Sabra. The airstrike that killed him also led to the deaths of two others including Mahmoud Hamami, a leader in the DFLP military wing, the Martyr Omar Al-Qassem Forces.[1][2]
His and Mahmoud Hamami's memorial service was held in Beirut, Lebanon at the headquarters of the DFLP. It was attended by, among others, representatives from various Palestinian resistance groups, Lebanese political parties, labor unions and sports clubs. Speeches were given by Ali Faisal, the Deputy Secretary General of the DFLP and Samah Mahdi of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.[3]

Abu Zarifa was pursued by the Israeli occupation forces during the years of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, and was subjected to several assassination attempts, and during the invasion of the village of Abasan in 2003, his house was completely blown up.
Abu Zarifa is a Palestinian national leader who enjoyed extensive relations with the Palestinian factions, and was a supporter of the armed resistance program against the Zionist occupation.
When the occupation began its ground incursion and forced citizens to flee the northern Gaza Strip, Abu Zarifa said: “We will not leave Gaza. We call on people to be steadfast and patient, and we will be the vanguard of that.”
For its part, the International Committee for Supporting the Rights of the Palestinian People (Hashd) strongly condemned the assassination of Talal Abu Zarifa, a member of the political bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, by the Israeli occupation.
The Commission said in a statement: The assassination of Abu Zarifa is a war crime that comes within the framework of the “Israeli” war of genocide against Palestinian civilians.
It called on the international community to stand up to its commitments to stop the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza, and to force the “Israeli” occupation to stop its crimes in the Gaza Strip and the rest of the Palestinian territories. It also called for providing international protection to the Palestinians and holding the occupation and its leaders accountable as war criminals.”

He returned to Gaza, occupied a leadership role in the Democratic Front organizations, and assumed many struggle responsibilities.
He was elected for several terms as a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front, most recently in the Eighth General National Congress, which concluded its work last April.
