David Harold Byrd (April 24, 1900 – September 14, 1986) was an oil baron, military contractor, and close friend of Lyndon B. Johnson. He owned the aeronautics company Ling Temco Vaught and the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas. In the fall of 1963, Byrd and his friend James Ling bought 132,000 shares of LTV stock even though Defense Secretary Robert McNamara was predicting reduced military spending. After the Kennedy assassination, LTV's stock rose to $169 per share by 1967 and Johnson awarded him with lucrative military contracts.[1]
