Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz (born 11 November 1955) is a German politician who has served as Chancellor of Germany since May 2025 and as Leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since January 2022. A neoliberal millionaire and committed imperialist, Merz's first act as incoming Chancellor, before even forming an electoral coalition, was to change the constitution to allow a significant increase in military spending.[1]
