Gonzalo Thought, along with Marxism–Leninism–Maoism, were both coined by Chairman Abimael Guzmán (better known as his nom de guerra, Chairman Gonzalo). Gonzalo Thought is the guiding form of Marxism–Leninism–Maoism used by the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path, of which Guzmán was the "Chairman" and led a cult of personality. He believed that he had 'synthesized' Maoism, that Mao Zedong had advanced Marxism–Leninism to a new stage, thus 'Maoism'; however, this was never Mao Zedong's nor the People's Republic of China's official stance. In fact, Chairman Gonzalo and his Maoist followers always supported the Gang of Four and the excesses of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and reject People's Republic of China as capitalist and revisionist. Gonzalo's theories include his own errant inventions.[1]
Gonzalo-aligned Maoists outside of Peru are often known by the epithet Gonzaloists, although they usually self-describe their ideology as "Marxism–Leninism–Maoism, principally Maoism" (MLMpM).

“In sum, Gonzalo Thought is none other than the application of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism to our concrete reality. This means that it is principal specifically for our Party, for the people's war and for the revolution in our country, and I want to emphasize that. But for us, looking at our ideology in universal terms, I emphasize once again, it is Maoism that is principal.”
