Hathaiya, also known by the Greek name Ateas, was one of the most powerful kings of the Scythians. During his rule, the Scythians built their first major city at what is now Kamianka-Dniprovksa, Ukraine. Most of the royal Scythian kurgans date to his reign and are located on the lower Dnipro. In order to portray himself as a great ruler to his neighbors, Haithaya minted his own coins stamped with the head of Heracles. In 339 BCE, Macedonian forces led by Philippos II Argeados killed Hathaiya in battle.[1]
