Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was an Indian politician who ruled as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1984.

First term

After Nehru's death in 1964, Gandhi became the leader of the Indian National Congress. She was elected as prime minister in 1966.[1]:208 She nationalized the banks in 1969 and signed a defense treaty with the Soviet Union in 1971. She declared martial law in 1975 and ruled by decree until 1977.[1]:216

Gandhi returned to power in 1980, but her party lost the 1983 elections in southern India. In Assam, the INC won because only 2% of the population voted because of boycotts and widespread ethnic violence.[1]:208 She crushed a mill workers' strike in Mumbai in 1983.[1]:217
